> kana | convert <
Convert hiragana to katakana, katakana to hiragana, or swap both at once. Half-width katakana such as ガ is supported, and kanji, letters and emoji stay untouched. Nothing is uploaded.
Character counts (input)
Hiragana and katakana both ways
Every kana from ぁ to ゖ is mapped to its katakana twin and back, including ゔ/ヴ, ゕゖ/ヵヶ and the iteration marks ゝゞ/ヽヾ.
Half-width katakana
Read half-width kana such as ガ パ ヴ and widen them, or write the result in half-width katakana for legacy systems.
Swap and count
Swap the script of every kana in one pass and see how many hiragana, katakana, kanji and other characters your text contains.

How the Conversion Works:
Hiragana (U+3041 to U+3096) and katakana (U+30A1 to U+30F6) sit exactly 0x60 apart in Unicode, so each kana is converted by adding or subtracting that offset. The same rule covers ゔ/ヴ, ゕゖ/ヵヶ and ゝゞ/ヽヾ. The long vowel mark ー and the middle dot ・ belong to both scripts and are kept. Half-width katakana store the voiced mark as a separate character, so ガ is first combined into ガ.
Example:
ひらがな → ヒラガナ カタカナ → かたかな ガギグ → がぎぐ

>> frequently asked questions
Q: What is the difference between hiragana and katakana?
A: Both are Japanese syllabaries with the same sounds. Hiragana is used for native words and grammar, katakana mainly for foreign words, names and emphasis.
Q: Can it handle half-width katakana like ガ?
A: Yes. Enable the half-width option and sequences such as ガ, パ and ヴ are combined into ガ, パ and ヴ before conversion. You can also output half-width katakana.
Q: What happens to kanji, Latin letters and emoji?
A: They are left exactly as they are. Only kana are converted.
Q: What happens to ー, ・ and ヷ ヺ?
A: The long vowel mark ー and the middle dot ・ stay as they are. ヷヸヹヺ have no hiragana equivalent and are also left unchanged.
Q: Is my text sent to a server?
A: No. The conversion runs in your browser and your text never leaves your device.
