Paste garbled text such as 縺薙s縺ォ縺。縺ッ or ã“ã‚“ã«ã¡ã¯. The tool tries every likely wrong-decoding pair, ranks the candidates and shows the recovered text. Nothing is uploaded.

Samples:

Candidates (best first)

Advanced: choose the encodings yourself

Pick the encoding the original bytes were in and the encoding they were wrongly read as. Selecting a candidate fills these in.

Automatic detection

Tries UTF-8, Shift_JIS, EUC-JP, ISO-2022-JP and Windows-1252 pairs and ranks the results by how Japanese they look.

[02]

Classic patterns

Covers 縺薙s縺ォ縺。縺ッ, ã“ã‚“ã«ã¡ã¯, ƒeƒXƒg, half-width kana soup and $B...(B without ESC.

Private

Runs entirely in your browser with the built-in TextDecoder. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How Mojibake Repair Works:

Garbled text is bytes written in one encoding but decoded as another. To undo it, the tool re-encodes the garbled text with the wrong encoding to get the original bytes back, then decodes them with the right one. It tries every plausible pair and scores each result by how much it looks like real Japanese.

Example:

縺薙s縺ォ縺。縺ッ <- UTF-8 read as Shift_JIS -> こんにちは ƒeƒXƒg <- Shift_JIS read as Windows-1252 -> テスト

Why Use This Tool:

  • >Fix garbled emails, CSV files and logs
  • >Find the wrong encoding pair automatically
  • >Compare ranked candidates side by side
  • >Private: nothing leaves your browser

>> frequently asked questions

Q: What is mojibake?

A: Garbled text that appears when bytes written in one character encoding are read as another, for example UTF-8 shown as Shift_JIS.

Q: Can every garbled text be fixed?

A: No. If the garbling replaced bytes with ? or the replacement character, that information is gone. Pure two-step garbling with intact bytes is usually recoverable.

Q: Why does it show several candidates?

A: Several wrong-decoding pairs can produce plausible text. The list is ranked by how natural the result looks, so check the top few.

Q: Why is UTF-8 read as EUC-JP not recoverable?

A: EUC-JP rejects many UTF-8 byte sequences and the decoder turns them into replacement characters, which destroys the original bytes.

Q: Is my text uploaded?

A: No. All conversion happens in your browser.
