MIME Type Lookup

Look up MIME types by filename, extension or media type. Search a versioned offline mime-db snapshot with IANA, Apache and nginx source labels.

Find a type from a filename

Enter report.json, .json or json to find extension mappings, or enter application/json for an exact type. A type wildcard such as image/* lists that family. Search mode matches part of a media type or extension. Results show source, known extensions, default charset and compressibility when the dataset provides them.

Several types can map to one extension. A filename lookup cannot inspect file bytes or determine whether an upload is safe. Unknown values are shown as null; they are not guessed. Limits are 1,000 query characters and 200 displayed results, with total and truncation reported separately.

A traceable offline snapshot

This uses mime-db 1.54.0, a fixed package snapshot aggregating IANA, Apache and nginx information. IANA-sourced filtering follows the dataset’s source label. Extension mappings and compressibility are ecosystem metadata, not necessarily fields supplied by the IANA registry.

The lookup does not refresh the IANA registry on each use, and registrations can change. The version is included in every result; use the reference link when checking a newly registered type. A nullable compressibility flag describes the format in the dataset, not an instruction to compress every file of that type.

Questions & answers

Is application/json the same as a .json extension?

A media type describes representation semantics; an extension is a naming convention. They often correspond, but neither a filename nor a claimed Content-Type proves actual file content.

Does a missing entry mean the type is invalid?

No. It may be a new registration, a local convention or absent from this snapshot. Consult the registry and the format’s specification.

Is my input uploaded?

No. Parsing and generation run in your browser. Engines and datasets load from this site; the tool does not store input or send it to a processing API.
