When to convert JPG to WebP

WebP is useful for website photographs and product images. Compare the downloaded size with the original JPEG: already optimized images may not get smaller.

JPEG has already used lossy compression. Saving it as WebP introduces another encoding step, so a higher quality setting helps limit additional artifacts. Converting does not recover lost detail or create transparency.

How to convert your image

Choose or drop an image. Leave Width empty to keep the original dimensions, or enter a width to resize proportionally. Click Convert after changing settings, inspect the preview, then download the result.

The original file is never modified. The result panel reports pixel dimensions and the input and output file sizes so you can judge whether the conversion helps.

Quality, metadata and limits

Re-encoding uses the browser canvas, which does not retain the original EXIF metadata. Do not use this workflow if you need camera metadata, exact color-profile preservation or archival fidelity.

Files are limited to 40 MB and 40 million decoded pixels. Output width and height are each limited to 10,000 pixels. Animated inputs produce a still image. Files are processed on this device; the image is not sent to a conversion server.

Questions & answers

Will this reduce the file size?

Sometimes. The result depends on image content, dimensions and quality. Compare the sizes shown after conversion; a different extension alone does not guarantee a smaller file.

Can I convert JPEG as well as JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are equivalent filename extensions for the same image format.

Why does the output look different?

Lossy compression, resizing, transparency replacement and browser color management can change the result. Keep the original and inspect fine text, gradients and edges before using the converted copy.
