Open and inspect an animated GIF

Choose or drop a GIF file. The first frame is shown after decoding; press Play to animate it, pause at any time or move the frame slider to inspect a specific frame. The status shows the frame number, delay and canvas dimensions.

Download frame PNG exports the composited visible frame, including image content retained from earlier frames. It does not export only the changed rectangle stored internally in the GIF.

How GIF frames are displayed

GIF frames can update only part of the image. The viewer combines those patches in order and follows restore-background and restore-previous disposal instructions. Frame timing is expressed in hundredths of a second in GIF files.

Playback loops for inspection regardless of the source loop count. Very short frame delays are clamped to 20 milliseconds. This preview is an inspection tool rather than a guarantee of identical timing in every browser or image application.

Limits and local processing

Files are limited to 20 MB and 10,000 frames. To bound decoded memory, the canvas pixel count multiplied by the number of frames must not exceed 40 million. A small compressed GIF can still exceed this limit when decompressed.

GIF decoding and PNG export run locally. This viewer does not convert GIF to video, remove backgrounds or edit frame delays. Keep the original GIF if you need to preserve its original animation data.

Questions & answers

Can I open a GIF without uploading it?

Yes. The selected file is read by the browser’s file APIs and decoded on your device.

Why is a small GIF rejected?

Compressed size is only part of memory use. Large dimensions and many frames can require much more memory after decoding.

Does the PNG keep the animation?

No. PNG export saves the currently displayed still frame. The source GIF remains unchanged.
