Number to Words Converter

Convert integers and decimals to English words. Supports negative numbers, grouped digits and American or British wording without rounding large integers.

Writing numbers in English

Enter a number such as 1,234,567.08. American wording gives “one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven point zero eight”. British wording includes “and” within hundreds and before a final group below one hundred.

Both options use the short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000. The tool converts cardinal numbers, rather than ordinal forms such as first, second or third.

Decimals, negatives and large values

Decimal digits are read individually after “point”. For example, 12.05 becomes “twelve point zero five”, and -0.50 becomes “minus zero point five zero”. Enter monetary values in a dedicated currency converter when you need dollars and cents.

The input is parsed as text rather than a floating-point number. Integers of up to 36 digits retain their original precision. Up to 100 decimal digits are supported; scientific notation, currency symbols and decimal commas are rejected to avoid ambiguous interpretation.

Questions & answers

Are “number to word” and “number to words” different?

They usually refer to the same conversion. Enter one numeric value here to obtain its English spelling.

Why does British English add “and”?

British usage commonly connects hundreds and the remainder with “and”: 342 becomes “three hundred and forty-two”. American usage usually omits it.

Does it support Indian numbering or currencies?

No. This page uses the international short scale with thousands and millions. It does not produce lakh/crore wording or currency-specific cheque amounts.
