Inspect or remove image metadata

Inspect reports the image dimensions, orientation and metadata that the parser can read, including common EXIF/GPS, XMP and IPTC fields. JPEG, PNG and WebP containers are supported, but not every maker-specific field is decoded. Metadata is displayed as text, never executed.

Remove metadata without re-encoding rewrites container chunks/markers and retains the compressed pixel stream. It removes common metadata and comments, including JPEG thumbnails. Keep orientation writes only a minimal orientation tag when needed; Keep color profiles preserves color information that can itself include device/profile descriptions.

Orientation, pixels and privacy scope

Removing an orientation tag can change how unchanged JPEG pixels are displayed. Re-encode displayed pixels applies the browser’s decoded orientation and saves a fresh PNG/JPEG/WebP; this removes the original metadata by drawing pixels, but JPEG/WebP encoding can alter quality and animations become a still frame.

This does not remove identifying information visible in the picture. Metadata-only removal preserves image-defining structures such as palettes, animation frames and Adobe JPEG color transforms. Keep a copy of the source and inspect the downloaded file when a particular metadata field matters.

Local processing and file limits

Images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. Limit: 40 MiB input, 10,000 pixels per side and 40 million pixels. Cancel, clear and input changes invalidate old results.

Questions & answers

Why is orientation still listed after removal?

Keep orientation is enabled by default so rotated photos keep their display direction. Disable it to omit that tag, or re-encode displayed pixels to normalize orientation.

Are files uploaded to a server?

No. Files, input text and results stay in your browser. Required engines, fonts and support files load from this site.
